Estimation of fertility in Kenya: an application of the relational gompertz and reverse survival models

Fertility in Kenya has been declining since 1980s. However, this decline experienced a stall during the period 2000-2007. The objective of this study was to determine levels and trends of fertility in Kenya. Specifically, this study sought to determine; levels and trends of fertility in Kenya, levels of fertility by region and fertility level by place of residence and education level. The study utilized 2009 census data. To achieve the above objectives, the study utilized the relational gompertz and reverse survival models in estimating Kenyan fertility.

This research project brings out the social and economic condition of married adolescents girls in slum areas of Nairobi. It explore the counterintuitive assumptions that early marriage is a rural phenomenal. It is commonly assumed that early marriage only occurs in rural life style where cultural beliefs are more practiced and entrenched. Yet in urban centre, especially in slum areas such as Kibera, more girls are married before reaching 18 years. Nairobi attracts migrants from rural areas in search of education and livelihood opportunities.

Workshop to review strategic plan 2013-2018

PSRI staff took two days (7th- 8th June) away from routine academic work to review the Institute’s strategic plan. The revised Strategic Plan (2013-2018) identifies a unique way of achieving the mandate of the Population Studies and Research Institute (PSRI) by taking into account past experiences, existing strengths and weakness, prevailing environment, available and required resources. It will therefore be used as a tool in enhancing the image of PSRI, mobilizing the requisite resources, and providing the general guidance in the PSRI’s efforts of achieving its vision.

Strategic management practices and challenges among small and medium enterprises in Westlands Division, Nairobi

The main objective of this study was to determine the strategic management practices adopted by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Westlands Division, Nairobi. The study also sought to establish the strategic management challenges such enterprises face in their operations. The research employed a descriptive survey design to obtain a sample of SMEs from the listing of the sampling frame containing 84 SMEs in Westlands Division. A sample of seventy four SMEs was identified and selected for this study. Out of this, fifty (50) enterprises responded, representing a response rate of 67.6%.

Relationship Between Cost Of Finance And Demand For Housing Units In Nairobi County

Majority of people cannot afford to purchase houses outright and have to rely on a mortgage financing to buy them. However there are several issues to consider and among them is the cost of financing. These costs include requirements for deposits, other charges such as appraisal fees, legal fees, stamp duty, ledger fees and interest rates: once the mortgage is taken out, interest has to be paid. The main purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between access to housing finance and demand for purchase of housing units in Nairobi County.
