Multiple use patterns of medicinal trees in an urban forest in Nairobi, Kenya

Medicinal plants support the healthcare needs of the most vulnerable human populations, including the rapidly increasing urban poor in developing countries. However, little is known about the role of urban forests in supplying traditional herbal remedies compared to those in rural areas. Different parts of medicinal species could be used to supply different forest products, and multiple uses may exacerbate impacts to the species. We focused on the debarking and cutting of woody species harvested for medicine and fuelwood in an urban forest in Nairobi, Kenya.

Water is an important commodity to human survival. As a result, households in developing countries spend considerable amount of time fetching water. This study was carried out to assess factors influencing accessibility to water for domestic use in Kipkaren Division of Nandi north District. Window screening, ceilings and closed eaves as sustainable ways to control malaria in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Malaria transmission in Africa occurs predominantly inside houses where the primary vectors prefer to feed. Human preference and investment in blocking of specific entry points for mosquitoes into houses was evaluated and compared with known entry point preferences of the mosquitoes themselves. Methods Cross-sectional household surveys were conducted in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to estimate usage levels of available options for house proofing against mosquito entry, namely window screens, ceilings and blocking of eaves.

This study sought to investigate the relationship between economic status and use of complimentary energy sources to electricity among households within Nakuru Municipality. The study was premised on the desire of Kenya to be a middle income economy by the year 2030, in which case a substantial capacity of electrical energy will be required to power the anticipated industrial activity hence the need to conserve electrical energy which would in turn be utilized in the manufacturing sectors.
